First Thoughts
I have started my very first blog. As I get ready for the start of my 23rd year in education and my 26th year of high school soccer coaching, it seemed like an ideal time to reflect on my teaching and coaching career. I feel very blessed to be a part of this profession. It has its challenges, but overall I would not want to trade occupations with anyone. Looking back, I think the first ten years of my teaching career we did not have electronic gradebooks. We used to write student grades in a dark blue gradebook and had to use a calculator to compute final grades. Now, the role of technology is changing the way we teach and learn and I think nearly all of it is taking us in a positive direction. However, for an older guy like me, trying to keep up with technological changes can at times seem overwhelming. I told my assistant soccer coach, a recent college grad, that when I was in college we didn't have the internet and hardly any students had their own computer. Cell phones were not in use yet. Younger teachers have grown up with all of this technology and are quite adept at integrating it into their classrooms. At times, I know students must think I am old fashioned but I want to make a genuine effort to stay modern and relevant. Thus, I am blogging. Not exactly sure how I will incorporate it into my classroom but I will figure out something even if I have to ask the students to give me suggestions as to how blogging may help them in the learning process.
Soccer season is upon us and I feel so fortunate to be able to coach at Mason. We have very talented and dedicated players who represent our school so well not just on the field but in the classroom as well. Many of my current seniors have scored in the 30's on their ACT. I definitely do not share my ACT score with them, needless to say it pales in comparison. I now have 4 members of my coaching staff, mostly volunteers, who played for me in my first season as the Mason boys' coach. It is so gratifying to see them come back and want to contribute to the program where they once played. As I get into blogging I will provide season updates, but as we approach the beginning of the regular season we are hopeful to build on last year's amazing season in which we won GMC, District, and Regional championships.
